Friday, July 25, 2008 – It’s Friday…..

Oh give me a home, where the buffalo roam…..well, maybe not exactly.  What you see in this picture are real buffalo in Idaho.

One thing I am recognizing about surviving the night is the fact that the pain medication wears out by the time I wake up to take my antibiotics.  Have to work on that timing!

But I digress from today’s theme – hydration.  It dawned on me that I am not drinking enough fluids, so today the point of focus will be fluids, fluids, fluids.  And getting that walk in.  Although, going up and down the stairs several times counts as a walk in my book, at least.

It might be my imagination at work, but I thought this morning I could detect just the smallest shadow emerging on the edge of my cheek – possibly an indication of some reduction in swelling?  Anyway, my mental ramblings have been going down the path of how crazy those “athletes” are – you know, the ones who pack their mouths with bite guards to protect their teeth from getting smashed in while they are playing sports.  No thank you.  All the Rocky movies – smashed and bloated faces, black and blue, for what??????  If this is what it feels like, they can keep it.

Right now I am still spending about half to three quarters of the day sleeping.  My life is evolving around meds, fluids and ice.  I had all these fantasies about re-watching the Lord of the Rings, but I think that my attention span can’t go longer than 20 minutes of screen without falling asleep.   Reading is putting me to sleep as well.  I have managed to be able to knit a four row pattern for a wrap for a half decent amount of time.  Also, I am thinking that maybe I can experiment with treadling on the spinning wheel, which could count as a modified walk.  That is, if I can keep up the coordination to create a continuous thread!  Well, at least I am somewhat ambitious in my recovery attempts.  But now, it’s time for a nap……

A second installment – what a performance.  It appears that post-dinner is my most active part of the day.  And coffee ice cream/banana smoothies are the best tasting.  Ok, I am drinking the broth as well. Denny took me for a 20 minute walk and I held on for dear life the entire time.  It was pretty warm out there.  I just don’t want to take any chances on taking a miss-step, if you know what I mean.  I did sleep pretty well after that, except for when Dinah decided she was the center of the universe and wouldn’t keep quiet for anything.

Some of these entries will be catch-up remembering from before I started writing.  For instance, I drank a lot of fluids in the hospital but between the juices, melted Italian Ice and Jello it was enough sugar to go into a diabetic coma.  I really felt it shriveling my throat, so that is where the water consumption started in earnest.  I actually liked the tea (Lipton), if that gives you an idea.  The broth didn’t taste salty, so I must have been sweating a lot as well.  Anyway, at home I can create a more balanced intake and really cut back on the sugar.  I had been doing that in general since December and was noticing a difference on the positive side, to the tune of – 12 pounds I might mention.  So at least I know I am going in the right direction.

Ciao for now!
